The Ancient (Marmina Monastery)
Abu Mina Area
Located 65 kilometers west of Alexandria (a lively train station near Lake Mariout and the new town of Burj Al -Arab), the history of the ancient church dates back to the 4th century AD.
The tomb houses the body of Saint Minas, an Egyptian saint who lived at the end of the third century and the beginning of the century.
He joined the Roman army and then escaped service when he began to persecute Christians during the reign of Emperor Diocletian and declared his Christianity and was therefore ordered to decapitate him. In the year 363 AD, the Twentieth Patriarch began to build a large church on the tomb of Marmina, and a beautifully decorated marble church was built and a basement was placed beneath it to place the relics of the saint.
The church was dedicated on the first day of the month Abib N and from the other specimens it appears to have been a large basilica in free form. It has two rows of colonnades and this church and the whole area are very well-known.
The archaeological site of Abu Mina includes many facilities with religious uses, including the pilgrimage center. This is the main building and is located in the south of the old residential area.
The square is surrounded by rows of columns With pilgrims arriving at a sacred site, and in the north of the courtyard there are two hotels built from an inner courtyard around the guest rooms, and in the northern areas there are two hot water baths necessary for the pilgrims after a long journey, the backyard opens the tribal church and royal grand cemetery.
The Abu Mina site was listed as an archaeological site in accordance with Resolution No. 698 in 1956 AD and in 1979 AD the site is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
